    Hip Hop Health Scares

    Back in college….

My then-roommate and I used to hang out all the time – until he began dating this girl from a nearby dorm.  I didn’t have a problem with it at all, but the girl seemed very shy and reserved and not able to relax even in comfortable settings.  Soon after, I found out why the girl had a hard time fitting in during a drive into the city: In the middle of a traffic jam, my roommate’s girlfriend had a seizure. My roommate knew exactly what to do and made sure she didn’t swallow her tongue.

It was one of the scariest moments I had during that time. When I hear these rappers having seizures and health problems, it makes me wonder if the strenuous position of power is simply too much?

Hip Hop Artists who Suffered Health Scares

Rick Ross  A year or so ago Ricky Rozay had a few health scares: Three seizures within a six month period.  According to Ross, the sudden activity was blamed on lack of sleep.  Other causes could be connected to alcohol, drug use (illegal and legal) and tumors. I am not insinuating that Ross was on drugs or even drank a lot.  I will say, however  this is something that he would have to monitor for the rest of his life.

Lil Wayne: EpilepsyWeezy is another rapper who suffered from multiple seizures and says he is epileptic. He blamed his busy work schedule, dehydration, and lack of sleep for his seizures. Last year in an interview with Katie Couric, he revealed he had a history battling epilepsy and one of his cousin died from the same thing when he was younger.

August Alsina: Three Days in a Coma + Seizures  Last month, August gave his fans a scare by landing in a three-day coma after falling onstage. While in the hospital, Alsina reportedly suffered from multiple seizures.   The all-too-common exhaustion and dehydration symptoms were once again named the culprits behind this performer’s attacks.  August, thankfully has recovered – and is even back on tour!

Chris Brown: Non-Epileptic Seizure  Chris suffered a non-epileptic seizure and was also treated for sleep deprivation and stress. It seems the negative attention he got from the assault on Rihanna was unrelenting and contributed to Brown’s attack. I also believe his own lashing out and violent outbursts also had a hand in his condition.

Rich Homie Quan– Back in May during a video shoot Quan had back to back seizures and also hit his head. He has since recovered and back to making music.

Kanye West-Kanye reportedly had a bad migraine and was checked into a hospital in Australia. There was a rumor he suffered seizure like symptoms, but they were quickly retracted.

It maybe the stress of maintaining the level of success some have achieved. It could be the lifestyle of partying, no sleep and no time to relax that could explain why within the last three years these artists have all suffered serious health threats. I just hope this is all we hear about it.

I was born in Long Branch New Jersey. During childhood I wanted to become a chef such as Bobby Flay or Martin Yen. I graduated from Johnson and Wales University in 2003 with the expectation of making a career into the foodservice industry. The dream slowly faded away after years of lusterless opportunities that only lead to more experience, but career growth. In 2007 I was hired in the telecommunications industry as a customer service representative. During these last few years the passion for writing grew as I had to learn to express myself in distinct ways. Today I am in pursuit in of a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism this year and I have a blog that has been running for a year. Also my articles have been published in two separate entertainment magazines with an established fan base. In addition to that LIB Magazine appointed their “Video of the Day,” which I search viral content that is SEO friendly. This is in addition to writing for the hip hop section of the magazine where I talk about issues within the hip hop community. I also talk about topics touch directly within the hip hop community in Long Island. I also write on my own blog about social issues and news stories that seems too unbelievable to be true.
