From Boys to Men, Hanson’s New Album ‘Anthem’ Proves That The Tulsa Boys Are All Grown Up.

While most children of the ‘90s remember Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson as the blonde, too-pretty moppets who sang cheesy pop songs like ‘MMMBop’, after one listen to their latest album release ‘Anthem’, it is clear to listeners that these talented brothers are looking to show off their more mature sound and leave their youth behind them.

Their new record dropped on June 18th, 2013, much to the delight of devoted Hanson fans who were extremely eager to hear new music from their favorite band, and the Tulsa boys did not disappoint! With the slight rock and roll vibe of ‘Fired Up’, which is their first song off of ‘Anthem’, Hanson instantly catches the ears of listeners thanks to catchy yet edgy lyrics like ‘This thing is built like a war machine/Burning up red hot like kerosene/This wrecking ball is about to drop/Once we start rolling we’ll never stop.’ These lyrics show that the brothers are not warbling about nonsensical words anymore; instead, they evoke the image of someone who has reached the final straw and they are not about to stay silent anymore. In a world where more and more Millenials are protesting against the status quo, the song has eerie overtones of the current political atmosphere.

However, not all of their songs are as gritty and aggressive as ‘Fired Up.’ There are some very sweet love ballads, including ‘Juliet’, ‘For Your Love’ and ‘Lost With Out You.’ Isaac and Zac sing lead on ‘For Your Love’ and ‘Juliet’ respectively, and it’s a nice change of pace  as Taylor sings lead on most of the songs. Isaac’s smooth as honey voice will delight both fans and non-fans alike while Zac’s dulcet tones are sure to charm even the most skeptical listeners!

There are also quite a few melancholy songs on the album as well, such as ‘Already Home’: ‘I don’t know what is broken/You act like you don’t belong here anymore/If you’ve really lost something/ Maybe you should start where you’ve been before/ I think you’re already home/ You keep running ‘round in circles boy/ You’ll end up right back in the storm…  With these hard-hitting, bittersweet lyrics, Hanson shows a surprising amount of depth, range, and maturity as well.

Still, not all of their songs are doom and gloom! ‘Get the Girl Back’ in particular is a fun, up-beat pop song that has cute lyrics such as ‘A girl like that deserves the best/ So you’ve got to show her/That you’re not like all the rest.’ Plus, the music video features Kat Dennings from Marvel’s ‘Thor’, the musician Drake, and Nikki Reed, who played Rosalie Cullen in ‘Twilight.’

Fans will also enjoy listening to ‘I’ve Got Soul’, which combines funk, groove, and their newfound grit to create a toe-tapping song that makes you want to get up and party down! This song is perfect for a summer party, as nobody will be able to resist the incessant beats which demand that its listeners start dancing and having fun.

All in all, if you’re looking to treat your ears to a well-rounded, well-crafted album, then head on over to iTunes, Amazon, or their official site to purchase ‘Anthem.’
