Uniqlo, a leading Japanese casual wear designer, is open for business in the Smith Haven Mall and provides a shopping experience you must see for yourself. In the covetous world of American mall culture, nearly every business claims to offer shoppers something special during their visit and few manage to follow-up with a special experience. Uniqlo delivers at every step of the way. (Even their business model is hands on from the start.)

Uniqlo was buzzing by 9:30 am. Black tension ropes — the kind you see used in banks — wrangled eager shoppers for the store launch. The staff, led by the local management crew and a team from the Uniqlo corporate office in Manhattan, was getting ready for a big day. Let’s get down to business.

So, what separates the Uniqlo shopping experience from the rest of the retail industry?

I think you’d have to judge for yourself. Number one, the product is different. Although a pant is a pant and a jacket is a jacket, once you look at the quality of fabric and the functionality, we consistently improve our clothing every year. We change colors, we upgrade the fabric and Uniqlo’s store service parallels the attention to detail and care expressed in the design process.

5 Reasons Why the Uniqlo Shopping Experience Is … Unique

It’s all about you. No, for real. Uniqlo is thoughtful at an elemental level to make sure every shopper is happy. The color schemes and patterns are designed to complement your identity, so you can own your wardrobe.

Uniqlo lets the customer lead the shopping experience. For instance, Uniqlo shoppers are never the last person in line. There is always a Uniqlo team member at the end of the line (with an awesome sign) to make sure things go smoothly and help people sufficiently.

Everybody cares about everyone. Each Uniqlo customer service team member cares about the shoppers, their colleagues and themselves. Anytime the Chief Operating Officer and customer service team can genuinely share the same expression of company values, in their own unique way, it’s a sign they believe in the same things.

The happy, knowledgeable staff. Did you know each Uniqlo employee is trained to perform alterations? If you need a hem and the pants are under $20, your alteration is free. Any alteration to products above this price point is only five bucks.

High-quality products. The fall and winter Heat Tech collections are designed for the different ways men and women sweat. “I think the Ultra Light Down (ULD) is one of the greatest products ever.” Eileen McMaster, VP Public Relations, said, “We strive for comfortable, reliable clothing.” Inside scoop: One ULD jacket weighs about the same as an iPhone without sacrificing what you look for in a jacket.

Can clothes really change the world?

Uniqo believes so and they are doing it. They have an impressive list of corporate social responsibility (CSR) achievements, but here’s what you need to know in New York. “We want to be a part of what helps the neighborhood.” McMaster said, “We’re really excited about our upcoming community initiative, A Warm Gesture.” What’s that? Here’s the jist:

  • December 1st – 15th: Uniqlo shoppers have the opportunity to purchase an item for a child at the register.
  • December 21st: Uniqlo counts the public donations and matches the contribution. (Here’s where it gets interesting.)
  • In collaboration with the Department of Homeless Services, children will receive vouchers to shop for an entire outfit. Everything will be color coded for easy matching. If you’re curious, yes, the children even get to go to the register and “purchase” the pieces themselves.

One more heads up for New Yorkers:

One of the things we want to do is be a good citizen in this country. How we do it is important, which is why we recently partnered with the Museum of Modern Art to offer Free Friday Nights at the MoMa.
