The LI Ducks had a historic run in the first half. Good enough for the second-best record in the Atlantic League, which could ultimately be rewarded with a playoff spot. As good as they were, the Ducks could not catch the Somerset Patriots, who clinched the Liberty Division. The Ducks enjoyed an amazing 17 game home winning streak until a loss to the aforementioned Somerset Patriots in the final series of the first half. The Long Island Ducks experienced a bout of homesickness…or should I say, “pond” sickness. After taking 2 out of 3 from the Sugar Land Skeeters last weekend, the Quack Pack flocked to a pond in Bridgeport, Connecticut, hoping to feast on some Bluefish in a three-game series. Little did they know that these Bluefish were hungry themselves and plucked their cross-Sound rivals and swept their feathers. The Bluefish-turned piranhas devoured and roasted our beloved Ducks in the first two games 10-2 and 9-1 on Monday and Tuesday night at Harbor Yard, respectively. Spring hopes eternal. This relentless winter finally gave way to a beautiful spring. The birds are out, days are longer and my two favorite words of summer are spoken-“Play Ball!” The Long Island Ducks, looking to improve upon their 73-67 mark last year, hosted the Sugar Land Skeeters in their home opener Friday.
