I love it when I am forced to change my mind. I was never a fan of DJ Theo, that is until last time I saw him in February. I thoroughly enjoyed his set and when he came back around in May, there was no way I was going to miss this. I found myself excited to see him spin once again.
Saturday night at The Emporium, Theo spun his Summer Preview Party. In other words, Theo spun some of the sexiest, danceable beats out there. The confetti was blown into the air, and cascaded down on us. Hard progressive house just abused our ears. It was glorious. He didn’t rely on gimmicks to motivate the crowd, like train whistles, he was the train… And it was steaming out of control.
Theo is quickly becoming one of my favorites. If you asked me months ago, I would say Bennassi, Morello, Cox and Oscar G were my favorites. I am at the point that Theo is creeping up into my Mount Rushmore of house. The thing that I love about Theo is he’s a local kid, where most now come from Europe, Vegas or Miami, that made it. He spins with a smile on his face; it looks like he’s enjoying the experience as much as I am. Most DJs I know want the stage area clear with the exception of a few sexy females and some friends. Theo is comfortable in turning the stage area in a ultra VIP area where he is dancing along with his fans. This makes him very approachable.
In a time that buzz is more important that talent, its refreshing to see there is a place for Theo. When DJed music went digital in the mid 2000s, it was a game changer. Unfortunately, this opened the door to every attention seeking celebrity to get behind the decks and embarrass themselves. Paris Hilton or Jersey Shore’s Pauly D have no business behind the decks. They have no talent. They are the typical generic bottle popping, load your play list on a Serato and press play type of DJ. Theo is different.
This summer when you make your plans for EDC, Zoo, Space Miami, possibly Ibiza stay local one night and check out Theo. Check out his Nervous Record brothers Oscar G, Boris or Junior Sanchez too.
