The old adage of “A family that plays together stays together” borders on cliche, but there certainly is some truth to it. The Wayans Brothers have been “playing” together for decades of remarkable comedy that includes In Living Color, the 90s sketch show that brought us talent like Jim Carrey, Jamie Fox, and a Fly Girl played by Jennifer Lopez. On Saturday July 19 the family of Keenan Ivory, Damon, Shawn and Marlon Wayans brought their talents to the NYCB Theatre in Westbury, NY.
Marlon Wayans opened the show with engaging energy to a crowd that was extremely receptive, to say the least. The youngest of ten Wayans siblings, Marlon is an unique talent. The comedian is like a child in his middle 30s, playing that role so well as to be one of the highest-grossing comedians of this generation, complete with stand up routines whose roots rely on modern happenings. His Michael Jordan set up was out of world. Marlon’s transition from his big screen persona to the stage dynamic is absolutely flawless.
My Wife and Kids star Damon Wayans was the next brother to grace the stage. He was a slightly more reserved than Marlon, but we expected that. His stories revolved around life on road, his kids and the awkwardness of being a Wayans. Now 53, the seasoned comedian gave great insight on what its like to be a Wayans Brother. His stand-up included a detailed analysis of the relationships he and his brothers have been through. When Keenan Ivory Wayans (also a director and founder of In Living Color) arrived, the eldest statesmen’s take on entertainment was completely different than from the others. Keenan’s less blatant ability to “imply” the joke was a refreshing take on the entire show. He concentrated on dating as an adult, plus his take on ageism was hysterical.
Shawn Wayans closed the night. The White Chicks actor concentrated on his fascination of the modern gym/fitness craze as well as some of his more, um, explicit relationships with others. Shawn took the liberty of giving his audience a few secrets to how to please a lady. The brothers came out after the show for a short press gathering with the crowd, taking the time to discuss future projects. FYI: There are no plans for another In Living Color or White Chicks because “It takes too long in makeup to become a white woman.” There is no doubt the Wayans brothers are a talented bunch, one we have seen them grow up before our eyes. Their performances were well executed, beautifully timed and relevant to their fans. The Wayans Brothers are a must see!
