All photography by Jill “The Bean” Griggs Ska is such a cool genre. It incorporates all. Ska takes in everything, rises it around and produces something beautiful. I love that The Great South Bay Music Festival incorporated a ska night! Patchogue’s signature music event just turned 13 years old. Friday night they picked up their horns and braced The Long Island heat to play. As always GSB Music Festival dotted $1 from every ticket sold to the GSB-Stony Brook Children’s Cancer Center. They also installed a “Storyville Tent” where 6 Long Island based organizations set up a…

Summertime is about friends and music. Well it is for me anyways. Growing up in the late 80s/ early 90s freestyle dominated the music scene in my neighborhood. The corner store always had Judy Torres playing on a transistor, Lamond played the cars. TKA was BBQ music. The sounds of Fresh Pond Road in Ridgewood was definitely Freestyle. This music brings me back to that place every time. I associate Freestyle music with “Being home”- that is to say something familiar and comfortable. Saturday night at The Bald Hill Amphitheater in Farmingville, they featured Freestyle Feast. Heavy hitters like aforementioned…

I’m passionate about a few things. Food is one of them.  My cultural home (birthplace of both my mother and father) of Croatia is another… when the two come together I’m in heaven. Outside of my own mother’s kitchen, Restaurant Dubrovnik is as close to authentic as it gets. New Rochelle you have a new player in town and it’s straight from the Adriatic. Aerial view of Dubrovnik, Croatia Most of you have seen the coastal city of Dubrovnik as the back drop in Game of Thrones, but it goes further. Dubrovnik is the back drop of southern Europe. It is…

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. I know chocolates and flowers are common as is brunch, but how about something more substantial? Enter Jalee Jewelers. Pearls They can make any pearl necklace in any length and bead size. Graduated pearls small to large are gorgeous. Sapphires This Sapphire and Diamond Chevron is a real wow piece. Whatever happened to minding your own business. Most people understand this concept. The owners of the Cliffton Bar, in Patchogue doesn’t. Last week, The Cliffton posted a picture of paying patrons, forcibly outing the pair. Thankfully, Long Island’s LGBT community, and other marginalized communities stood up to this action. Their course of action- a peaceful protest last Friday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvhIkFd03jE Organizer Annie Manildoo About 200 people braved the rain to have their voices heard. The Cliffton is officially on notice. This will not stand! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SknH9YavwVU Candidate for Brookhaven Supervisor- Will Ferraro

There are a few pleasures in life. One of them, in my opinion is food. There is nothing more satisfying than simple, honest food. Homecoming at it’s core. El Pollo Inka in Forest Hills, is the epitome of this. A small comfortable restaurant located on Queens Blvd, El Pollo Inka, has been one of our favorites for years. Before LIB was ever a thought, work days ended with a group of us meeting here for dinner, two maybe three days a week. It is the perfect place to meet friends and share a rotisserie chicken. Our favorites have been the…

We- Used by a speaker to refer to himself or herself and one or more other people considered together. The Korean word for “we” is Woori. The plural form is the basis of a Flushing restaurant Woori. Together is the idea that draws cultures together. Community, mores and social norms are principles in creating the idea of “Woori.”  Woori has a very modern feel. Wood panel boards line one wall, black vinyl with wording describing the process adorn the other one. The decor is simple, understated and surprisingly modern. It is incredibly comfortable.  Top left Clockwise- Kimchi , Fresh Tofu,…
