Open me!!
Community is important. Community is like a living object. It has to be cultivate, embraced and grown. Well, Riverhead Business Improvement District (BID) did just that this pat weekend. The BID successfully hosted it’s first holiday market December 6th, dubbed the “East End Merry Market.”

Nice and warm
The temperature was cold (high 30s) but its December, let it be cold. The bon fire was raging, the hot chocolate was flowing and smiles were ear to ear. Forty something vendors stood ready to welcome hundreds of holiday shoppers.

Soronko- West African Empanadas

El Amor Del Caribe- Dominican Empanadas
There are a few vendors I would love to highlight. First lets stat with food (duh! Of course I’m starting with food!) we tried three different types of Empanadas, a Dominican one, a west African variation and a Polish one. Sure it was called a Pierogi but let’s not let details get in the way.
El Amor del Caribe brought a food truck. I love mobile deliciousness. They served a very traditional beer or chicken empanada. It was very good, kinda what you expected. Flavorful, well constructed and consistent (each were made the same as the one ahead of it.) Soronko made West African empanadas. These were completely different. It was more doughy. The play on spices were completely different from what I ever had. I was pleasantly surprised by this. It was one of the best things I’ve enjoyed this season. Lastly what can I say about pierogis. The little Polish pockets of pure perfection. I want to reincarnate as a pierogi and make everybody happy one day.

Petal and Pearls
Petal and Pearls sold pressed flower jewelry. The Chamber of Commerce hosted a Puppet show. North Fork Brewing and Ubergeek Brewery were providing libations for the festive crowd. Just a fabulous time all throughout.

I hope to see you next year. In fact I’m hoping for a market over the summer!
