The Emporium just keeps bringing us talent from every era. TKA performed a sold-out show at The Emporium on Friday, April 10th. It was difficult to move throughout the place, but the proclaimed “freestyle freaks” managed to shake their bodies everywhere.
TKA is an American Latin freestyle trio who first reigned on the 1980s and early 1990s scene, mainly in New York City and Miami, Florida. Members Tony Ortiz, Louis “Kayel” Sharpe, and Angel “Love” Vasquez released plenty of hit singles to win the love of female fans and New York’s freestyle radio station 103.5 KTU, among many others. Upon their return to Long Island, the trio performed many songs from the 1990 album “Louder than Love” and of course ended the night with their hit “Maria”.
Many may not know that the trio stopped recording soon after the single “Louder than Love” was released. Following the split, the members of TKA went on to pursue independent interests. Kayel recorded under the name K7 and had a hit hip-hop album called Swing, Batta, Swing, which contained the hit singles “Zunga Zeng” , “Come, Baby, Come”; and “Cab Calloway”. The trio got back together in 2001. Thankfully, Long Island was able to see the boys in action (14 years later!) on our very own local stage at Emporium. TKA gave a truly amazing show, performing so many of the hits listed while showing their choreographed moves. It was a pleasure to meet these guys and speak to them. They all were so nice and very grateful to be back on Long Island.
Emporium keeps coming back with some of the best acts in entertainment; look for it! DMX will be hitting the stage soon.
