One thing I have learned, is a way to understand others through different foods. Ethnic meals, even the Americanized styles, offer a peek into a different culture. Most of us have tried Chinese food and have either loved it, or it was the worst thing you ever eaten. When coming to decide what’s for dinner, Chinese is usually pretty low on my scale. In terms of Asian cuisine, I’d much rather Sushi, Pad Thai, Chicken Tikka Masala or even Vietnamese Pho sandwiches. Until I tried Joe’s Shanghai soup dumplings. It was a game changer. We made a pit stop in…

American art comes in so many forms. Oil on canvas, clay and hands, a tattoo gun for skin or cameras and landscapes — all of it feeds the soul. One of the best at shutter-based art, aka photography was Ansel Adams (b. February 1902- April 1984). Adams is to the camera what Picasso was to paint. In other words, they weren’t the first, but widely considered revolutionary. Ansel Adams is a San Francisco born photographer whose best work was arguably done in America’s West Coast, namely Yosemite National Park. Adams is often considered the “Godfather of high resolution, black and…
Reported by John Milovcic and Miguel Baez The word “historical” is thrown around a lot these days. Experiences that are mundane or nondescript are typically blown out of proportion. When history actually does happen, we should stop take it all in and appreciate it. This week, our beloved New York Cosmos soccer club made International history! The New York Cosmos, a member of the NASL soccer league,Long Island-based soccer club will be the first US team to play in Cuba in 16 years. I repeat: It is not a high profile team like the Yankees, Lakers or even the Cowboys –…
It seems as if new burger joints are popping up everywhere. Celebrity chefs set up shop and charge top dollar for their patty-shaped products. When eating at Bobby’s Burger Palace (the brainchild of Chef Bobby Flay), do you feel like Flay is really in the kitchen? Enter a change in attitude: Enter Dirty Burger. A simple Long Island restaurant doing what they do, and very well. We met the guys at Dirty Burger last year at the Long Island Buffalo Festival, when owner Ian Russo took home the WWE inspired Wing Championship Belt for Nassau County, and the Miller Lite…
On Saturday February 21, Long Island’s premiere nightclub The Emporium hosted Winter Con. New York’s hit mixer DJ Theo trekked thru the snow and ice in this eternal winter of 2015, Saturday to Patchogue, Long Island. Theo didn’t just show up to the party – he spun an epic 6 hour set on this night. Truth be told, I had heard of DJ Theo, but never really listend. It was always my opinion that any remixer who still had the “DJ” moniker in front of his name isn’t worth his salt. For instance, Benny Benassi, Robbie Rivera and Oscar G…
There is something special happening in Patchogue, Long Island. Yes, this bedroom village is set against the Great South Bay, and if you close your eyes.. it just might become the very next Miami. At the center of this turn around, or at lease partially at the center is Miguel Baez’s Village Cigar Headquarters. In the past few months, cigar heavyweights Nestor Miranda, Erik Espinosa and Danny Moya have trekked out from warm Miami to our little frigid town of Patchogue. Last Friday, a packed VCH welcomed Espinosa and Moya with open arms. Who are these guys, exactly? Erik Espinosa…
With Butler’s interception, this year’s installment of the Super Bowl was over! We have 3 long weeks until pitchers and catchers; a full month and a half for MLB’s opening day. March Madness is one month away. Local basketball is nothing to write home about this season. Yes, we have 2 local hockey teams playing well, but the nights can be long and the lack of distractions unsettling. For you sports fans, things are about to change. Enter Hops and Props Craft Beer Fest, February 7th, 2015 in Garden City. Most craft beer festivals are located in large, plain, multi-functional…
As 2015 rolls in, instead of making lavish resolutions, I decided to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Thing like really living for the moment, or focusing on a few tasks and doing them well. I plan on getting lost in a great cup of coffee or enjoying open roads and dirty drum n’ bass as I drive. Yes, 2015 will be the simplest year I’ve lived thusfar. It all began with at Georgio’s Coffee Roasters in Farmingdale. The year started with an Ethiopian roasted coffee called Semeon Abay. Semeon Abay is an intense, intricate and sweet roast that drinks…
New York Jets fired HC Ryan and GM Idzik at 8:30am on December 30, 2014. As the clock showed 0:00 in Miami, another Jets season has come to a close. It has been more than 45 seasons since the Jets held the Lombardy Trophy; in fact, that’s even longer than I have been alive. 4 wins versus 12 losses was just not good enough to save that Rexy bastard’s job. Black Monday has come, both Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik are gone. The time is ripe to start a new chapter of Jets’ history. Head Coach Rex Ryan manned…
During holiday season, the quaint Village of Huntington, Long Island is dressed up much like a Norman Rockwell painting. It is safe to say, the only thing missing was hot chocolate served by mom. Inside The Paramount, however, it was a different scene: Nu metal/hard rock band Korn was prepping to rock our eardrums! After a 20-minute or so delay, the eager crowd whipped themselves into a frenzy all the while shouting “We want Korn” over and over again. It was Korn they got. Lead singer and Korn frontman Jonathan Davis began his heavy scat sounds to a thrilled audience.…
