There are always a couple of things I tell folks when they visit or just move here: – The best way to get to see the city is experience it for yourself, ditch the maps. Pick a neighborhood without a real destination and stop into a cafe or bar, chill at a park w/ a bodega beer (chances of meeting a bodega cat super high), look for street art – challenge yourself to be part of it instead of see it in passing or on Insta. – Take the ferries! Goodness, we talk about hidden gems, that’s definitely one of…

“What is truth? What is fantasy? How does the line between them blur in visions, revelations, and flights of fancy? Such eruptive events supplant the real with the sur-real, not in the sense of hallucination, but of that which sur-vives and supersedes the familiar, revealing an essence that haunts it. The pieces gathered in Phantasm use a range of media to invite the viewer to consider the presences and energies that lurk within such everyday views as landscapes, household objects, and domesticity, as well as the forces manifest in the alternating tempos of natural and human time. Michael Cuomo’s series…
When I started contributing for LIB Magazine in 2017, Emergence Arts didn’t exist. The concept was brewing, but truth is I was still hyper-focused on how to exhibit vedhead Photography. It’s around that time I asked any creative professional I met: how should I launch my photography business? Should I take head-shots? Submit my photos for stock catalogs? Commercial photography? Continue with submissions to publications and gallery exhibitions? I was finally ready to pursue photography after years of occupying roles in licensing, inventory, and building computers and started collecting people’s experiences, resources, references… That’s when the opportunity to exhibit my…
Looking for great things to do in September? Well, come see what I’ve been working on since I haven’t been writing here! This is the grandest, biggest, most special exhibit I’ve ever had the pleasure to curate and completely coordinate. It’s been draining financially, emotionally, and physically and it’s still more than a week away. I’m not even done yet, and couldn’t be happier! I love art, my art, and this is a once in a lifetime family exhibit. To say I’m excited is an understatement. I hope you’ll come share in the joy and strength of being a New…
The Public Art Fund unveiled 40 new artworks as part of our citywide exhibition: Art on the Grid. Joining the first group of ten, these new works by New York-based artists are now on view across 500 JCDecaux bus shelters and 1,700 LinkNYC kiosks. Created in the spring of 2020, these 50 works reflect on artists’ experiences as the COVID-19 pandemic was disrupting our lives, and the parallel epidemic of systemic racism was coming into sharp and painful focus. They address varying aspects of life in New York City including protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement; personal experiences ranging…
The people of the United States have been struggling with the legacy of slavery. When George Floyd was killed by the police on May 25, a new stage in the battle for civil rights and justice erupted around the country. These images show people in New York City engaged in that struggle — with energy, determination, sadness, anger, hope, and vision. Alex Ferrone Gallery reopened to a steady stream of masked art admirers last weekend who came to see the long-awaited Arborescent Exhibition. Originally slated to open back on Arbor Day weekend, the Gallery had been mandated closed since March. Alex Ferrone and her partner, Richard Abatelli spent weeks preparing a new safety protocol to reopen her Gallery that included new signage, directional floor arrows, new contactless soap and hand sanitizer dispensers, additional refuse pails, and safety cones. The reception was held outdoors on the parking area which was roped off with one entrance and exit, and white physical distance reminder…
