Before Woodstock, before the Stonewall riot there was the Miss Fire Island Pageant. The first Miss Fire Island Pageant was held in 1966, when bartender Johnny Savoy had a great idea. This time period was incredibly volatile. It bridged the Ultra conservative 1950s and center right years of the 1970s. The Miss Fire Island Pageant is as relevant today as it was in it’s inception. This is the signature event at the Ice Palace Nightclub and Grove Hotel. Miss Fire Island is not a drag show. It’s a celebration of life and love. It’s about being who you are…

As I sat on the lawn of the Amphitheater at Bald Hill, watching the Beach Boys I realized they have become America’s greatest export. The Beach Boys, 60 years in the making, have crafted a lifestyle synonymous with Southern California. They created a culture that includes surfing, beautiful girls and love. When you think SoCal cool the Beach Boys are on the list. Although I’m not a fan, per se, I appreciate them. There is a respect the Beach Boys. The music just isn’t meant for me, however, their poppy, doo wopish sound is known world wide. I bet if…
Part of LIB’s culture is encouraging new talent. The prerequisite for encouraging talent is noticing talent. When I heard a new guitarist is playing an acoustic set at Kelly’s Pub in Bohemia, I had check it out. Enter Matt Taylor. Matt is a young, talented artist who is up and coming. Off in a corner next to the bar there he was set up- a stool, a guitar and microphone stand. All the tools of the trade. When I walked in we heard a real good rendition of John Mellencamp (not sure if he went with the ‘Cougar’ moniker at…
My first love, when it comes to music, is Freestyle. Freestyle in the late 80s dominated Ridgewood, Queens like doo- wop did in the 50s. Everyone I knew listened to TKA, La India, George Lamond, Cynthia, Judy Torres or Sebastian. Freestyle music has become the sound track of my youth- and I’m happy about that! Dublin Deck is ready Last Friday, Dublin Deck Patchogue hosted Soave, Cynthia and the kings of freestyle TKA. From all accounts Mother Nature is a Freestyle Freak too! For a month that has been dominated by the Mercury reaching 90s often and humidity soaring in…

Don’t worry about a thing. ’Cause every little thing gonna be alright. DubCo Beer Co We were singing through the rain drops this year at Bay Fest, hosted by Great South Bay Brewery. We were dancing in the puddles, enjoying life and having no interest in drinking anything resembling a Budweiser. Bay Fest celebrates local breweries, and the resistance to being like everyone else. There is a spirit of community, and independence. Ommegang Brewery Captain Lawrence Tradewinds Rocking out GSB The best of the best were here. GSB was pouring a fantastic Pilsner. Jumaane Williams (left) David Pechefsky (right) US politics has become such a contentious issue. It is a polarizing topic. Most people hold their opinions in such high regard there is very little room for debate. The headlines are made at the Presidential level but more important to our daily life is local elections. David Pechefsky Running for Congress Zeldin comes off as a partisan Republican. He has been a supporter of Donald Trump. As…
